Our Trainers

Joe Pride
With no family history in racing, Joe Pride harboured a passion and ambition to become a horse trainer. He learned the craft from a few notable trainers before forming an association with highly-respected horseman John Size. When Size moved to Hong Kong, Pride went out on his own in 2001 and initially became renowned for his affinity to rejuvenate older horses, often getting them to produce career best form. Tricolours has enjoyed a very successful partnership with Joe Pride over the years. Joe has trained the likes of Pecans, Fasika and Threeood – and is now training some of Tricolours’ most promising ever 2 and 3 year old colts / fillies.

Toby and Trent Edmonds
Toby Edmonds whas been surrounded by horses his whole life. He started in his teens learning his trade from renowned horseman such as Neville Begg and Peter Snowden based in Scone. After previous stints at the Gold Coast and Warwick Farm he re-located permanently to his current Gold coast stables back in 2011 and each year he has increased his number of winners whilst maintaining his industry leading strike rate.

Peter Moody
Legendary trainer Peter Moody needs no introduction. One of the true icons of the sport, Peter has recently teamed up with Tricolours in training our Capitalist filly. Peter Moody’s first major winner was AMALFI in 2001 and first Group One winner was AMALFI in the 2001 VRC Victoria Derby. He is obviously most famous for training the unbeaten superstar Black Caviar.

Gai Waterhouse and Adrian Bott
Golden Slipper winning combination of Gai Waterhouse and Adrian Bott have joined the Tricolours team. With facilities in Sydney and Melbourne, it’s a partnership which was formed in 2016 between Gai Waterhouse – daughter of racing legend TJ Smith – and Adrian Bott, who grew up in the racing world and has a well respected name in the industry. Tricolours is thrilled to partner up with Gai / Adrian for the first time, with our stunning Star Witness / Gold Epona colt (purchased from the 2021 Inglis Classic Sale).

Mick Price
Mick Price has firmly established himself as one of Australia’s leading racehorse trainers since taking out his licence in 1991. In 2003, Mick trained the trifecta in the Group 3 Blue Diamond Preview, and then won the race in 2004. Mick kept his fantastic record with two year olds by winning both Blue Diamond Preludes in 2005. We are excited to have partnered with Mick Price to train our recent 2021 Inglis Classic Sale purchase – a beautiful Zoustar x Farasha yearling filly.

Matt Cumani

Matt’s approach seamlessly blends the best of old school horsemanship with his own take on globally-informed techniques and up-to-the-minute industry advancements. We love Matt’s meticulous approach and he is a great fit for Tricolours.

John Sargent
Beginning in the mid-1980s, John Sargent has built an international reputation as a trainer who gets results with horses he has either selected from the auction ring or sourced through stable clients.
After training successfully in New Zealand for many years preparing more than 200 winners, Sargent took up the challenge of relocating to Malaysia. During his stint he topped the trainers premiership and won all the major Group I races in the region. He is a master trainer of stayers, especially mares – and he trained our wonderful mare Miss Moana, before her career was cut short by injury. “Sarge” currently trains a number of our up and coming young racehorses, and we feel very privileged to have him as part of the Tricolours training team.

Mark Newnham
Mark has worked under the masters including Bart Cummings and Gai Waterhouse, in a career spanning over 30 years in racing. Mark was the winner of the inaugural Godolphin “Excellence in Racing” award in 2015. After a lifetime of working around horses, training was always going to be his destiny. His calm nature, professional manner and wonderful horse skills make him the perfect choice to train your horse. Mark trained one of our most promising ever horses, Captain Stardust (before he was sold to Hong Kong, and we now have a number of our exciting up and coming young racehorses placed with Mark.
